{"id":55,"date":"2015-01-04T16:10:02","date_gmt":"2015-01-04T16:10:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.cottagesinupperswaledale.com\/?page_id=55"},"modified":"2018-01-09T16:55:38","modified_gmt":"2018-01-09T16:55:38","slug":"things-to-do","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/cottagesinupperswaledale.co.uk\/?page_id=55","title":{"rendered":"Things To Do"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Over the generations the people of Swaledale have shaped the landscape and it\u2019s history.<\/p>\n<p>The place names of Swaledale reflect the long history of Norse settlements and their language, still heard in the local dialect even today.<\/p>\n<p>Our cottages make a wonderful place to relax and enjoy the many views and walks, whatever season you choose to visit us.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-152\" src=\"https:\/\/cottagesinupperswaledale.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/pw_map.jpg\" alt=\"pw_map\" width=\"450\" height=\"574\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cottagesinupperswaledale.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/pw_map.jpg 500w, https:\/\/cottagesinupperswaledale.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/pw_map-235x300.jpg 235w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>For local attractions and places of interest to create a great day out, here are a few ideas;<\/p>\n<p>For walkers <strong>The Pennine Way<\/strong> passes through Thwaite and the <strong>Coast to Coast<\/strong> walk passes nearby <strong>Kisdon Hill<\/strong>. Why not follow them for awhile as they pass through this glorious part of their route.<\/p>\n<p>Enjoy local walks to <strong>Keld, Muker<\/strong>, up and around <strong>Kisdon Hill<\/strong>. See the <strong>Hay Meadows<\/strong> in around June\/July time, which are designated as Sites of Special Scientific Interest.<\/p>\n<p>In <strong>Thwaite there is The Kearton Country Hotel<\/strong>, offering food and drink. ( actually, our family, the Hunter family, established the Hotel in 1956 and ran it till 1982. We named it <strong>The Kearton<\/strong>, after the famous <strong>Kearton brothers<\/strong>, they were born in Thwaite and went on to become pioneers of wild life photography.)<\/p>\n<p>The village of <strong>Muker<\/strong> is 1 mile away, visit the &#8220;local&#8221;, of the upper dale, <strong>The Farmers Arms<\/strong>. It offers a warm welcome and serves good local ales and food.<\/p>\n<p>There is also <strong>Swaledale Woollens<\/strong>, offering hand knitted products from local wool, ranging from sweaters to gloves.<\/p>\n<p>There are various tearooms dotted around the Dale, visit <strong>Keld<\/strong>, (Rukins) see <strong>Kisdon Force waterfall<\/strong> nearby, <strong>Muker<\/strong> teashop and at <strong>Gunnerside<\/strong>, (Ghyllfoot tearooms).<\/p>\n<p>Waterfalls of interest in the area are; <strong>Wain Wath Force<\/strong>, <strong>East Gill Force<\/strong> and <strong>Catrake Force<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>For those of you who like a ghost story, visit <strong>Ivelet Bridge<\/strong>, <strong>Ivelet<\/strong>, near Gunnerside. Ivelet bridge is a high arched packhorse bridge dating form 1687. Legend has it that a headless dog haunts the bridge. It silently runs up the bridge before jumping over the wall into the River Swale below.<\/p>\n<p>Further up Swaledale and near Arkengarthdale is, <strong>Tan Hill Inn<\/strong>. It is the highest pub in Great Britain at 1,732ft above sea level.<\/p>\n<p>Also made famous by the Everest window adverts.<\/p>\n<p>Travel down Swaledale from Thwaite, to visit <strong>Hazel Brow Farm<\/strong>, <strong>Low Row<\/strong>. It is a traditional rural farm, with organic farming, guided tours of the farm, meet the animals and visit their tearoom.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Low Row<\/strong>, also offers <strong>The Punch Bowl Inn<\/strong>, (considered to be a gastro pub).<\/p>\n<p><strong>The C.B. Inn<\/strong> (also a gastro pub) can be found in <strong>Arkengarthdale<\/strong>. Arkengarthdale is home to, <strong>Arkle Riding School<\/strong>. For mountain biking visit <strong>Dales Mountain Biking Centre<\/strong> at Fremington near <strong>Reeth<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Further down Swaledale is <strong>Richmond<\/strong>, considered to be the capital of Swaledale. The market town grew up around the Norman Castle, <strong>Richmond Castle<\/strong>. Building work for the Castle commenced as far back as 1071 as part of the Norman Conquest of Saxon England, It was built to subdue the unruly North of England (there was considered to be a year long siege, around 1174). <strong>Richmond Castle<\/strong> is one of the finest examples of Norman building in Britain. Today <strong>Richmond<\/strong> is a busy market town, with a cobbled market place and Georgian styled houses surrounding it. Richmond also has a beautiful <strong>Georgian Theatre<\/strong>, built in 1788, regular performances are still held today.<\/p>\n<p>Take a drive over the <strong>Buttertubs Pass<\/strong> from <strong>Thwaite<\/strong> to <strong>Hawes<\/strong>, with it\u2019s stunning scenery and moor land views.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-154 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/cottagesinupperswaledale.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/buttertubs.jpg\" alt=\"buttertubs\" width=\"272\" height=\"185\" \/> Stop and take a look down a Buttertub, (said to be used by local farmers to keep their butter cool on the way to market).<br \/>\n<strong>Buttertubs Pass<\/strong> has been featured in many TV programmes, (it is allegedly one of Jeremy Clarkson\u2019s favourite routes.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hawes<\/strong> is a picturesque Dales market town, made famous by it\u2019s Wensleydale cheese.<\/p>\n<p>Visit the <strong>Wensleydale Creamery<\/strong>, well known for it\u2019s connection with <strong>Wallace and Gromit<\/strong>, after all, <strong>Wensleydale Cheese<\/strong> is <strong>Wallace\u2019s<\/strong> favourite cheese.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Wensleydale Creamery<\/strong> has a viewing gallery so you can watch the cheese been made at various times of the day. It also has a cheese shop where you can buy and sample the cheese, a gift shop, <strong>Calvert\u2019s Restaurant<\/strong>, and <strong>Coffee shop<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In <strong>Hawes<\/strong> you can also visit, the<strong> Ropemakers<\/strong>, <strong>Dales Countryside Museum<\/strong>, <strong>Hawes Play Park<\/strong> and a selection of tearooms, cafes and pubs. Hawes also has grocery shops,a butchers, bakers, newsagents, Barclays and HSBC banks, post office, library, chemist, electrical store, antique shops and many gift shops.<\/p>\n<p>Just a short walk from <strong>Hawes<\/strong> is <strong>Gayle Mill<\/strong> in <strong>Gayle<\/strong> village.<\/p>\n<p>It is a 19th Century sawmill, complete with working Victorian machinery and water powered turbines (featured on The BBC \u2018Restoration\u2019 programme.)<\/p>\n<p>For more history visit Wensleydale\u2019s very own castle, <strong>Bolton Castle<\/strong>. Bolton Castle is a medieval fortress built in 1379, (Mary Queen of Scots was one imprisoned there)<\/p>\n<p>Wensleydale also has it\u2019s very own lake,<strong> Semerwater<\/strong>. Semerwater lies south of <strong>Askrigg<\/strong>, it is Yorkshire\u2019s only natural Lake . A well-known legend surrounds <strong>Semerwater<\/strong>, the lost village of <strong>Semer<\/strong>. For many years it has been told that \u2018a town once stood where the water runs deep\u2019 Legend has it that a weary traveller was refused and food and shelter in the town, he cursed the town to a watery grave. Some say that if you listen carefully, you can sometimes still hear the Church bells ring from time to time.<\/p>\n<p>Wensleydale has some beautiful waterfalls, one of which is the famous <strong>Aysgarth Falls<\/strong>, featured in may films such as \u2018A Woman of Substance\u2019 and \u2018Robin Hood\u2018. <strong>Hardraw Force<\/strong> was also in Kevin Costner\u2019s , Robin Hood Prince of Thieves. <strong>Hardraw Force Waterfall<\/strong> is claimed to be England\u2019s highest unbroken waterfall, comprising a single drop 100ft from a rocky overhang.<\/p>\n<p>Many locations in Wensleydale and Swaledale have been featured in a variety of films, Wuthering Heights (2011) was filmed just outside Thwaite. <strong>All Creatures Great and Small<\/strong> was filmed in most of the pretty villages of Swaledale, Wensleydale and the surrounding area. James Herriot\u2019s surgery was famously placed in Askrigg, in Wensleydale.<\/p>\n<p>Further a field visit <strong>White Scar Caves<\/strong> near <strong>Ingleton<\/strong>, they are the longest show of cave in England and UK, open from Feb- Oct daily, Sat and Sun, Nov-Jan, weather permitting. See the huge Battlefield Cavern, Witch\u2019s Fingers Cavern and Devil\u2019s Tongue Cavern.<\/p>\n<p>If you like Folly\u2019s and gardens, a visit to <strong>Forbidden Corner<\/strong> near <strong>Leyburn<\/strong>, is a must. Voted the best children\u2019s attraction in Yorkshire and the Best European Folly of the 20th Century.<\/p>\n<p>Not forgetting the older kids, they will certainly will enjoy the attractions at <strong>Lightwater Valley<\/strong>, it is considered to be one of the finest <strong>Theme Parks<\/strong>, in the UK, a great family day out. It is also famous for it\u2019s biggest attraction, \u2018The Ultimate\u2019, Europe\u2019s longest rollercoaster.
